The Keys to Family Business Success
For over 35 years, Bill has devoted his career to the service of others in the area of wealth transition planning. He co-founded AUCTORIS, formerly known as Benefit Concepts of Colorado, Inc., in 1978, which serves clients in over 22 states.
AUCTORIS is in the business of helping families consciously craft their legacies instead of letting it happen by default. Serving privately held business owners and their families, Bill makes their legacies more sustainable by including the family’s intangible assets and liabilities into their estate planning. He practices a values-based planning process and uses a clearly stated set of principles and values from each client that then drives the planning process to a successful conclusion. He often assumes the role of project coordinator to align the efforts of all professionals toward the client’s objectives.
Bill and his team assist families and privately-owned businesses:
Since 1986, AUCTORIS has been a member of the prestigious M Financial Group. M Financial Group is one of the nation’s leading financial service design and distribution companies. It was founded on the principle that “off-the-shelf” life insurance products often do not meet the needs of the high net worth and corporate markets. M Financial is the only group in the world to have accumulated mortality and persistency information of the high net worth market indicating far better experiences than the general population. They have worked closely with the nation’s most prestigious insurance carriers to bring the industry’s most innovative solutions for affluent, ultra-affluent, corporate executives, successful entrepreneurs and Fortune 1000 companies.
Through AUCTORIS, Bill has worked with the sole owner of a transportation company to develop a business succession plan that allows his family to realize the value of the business while reducing their involvement and financial exposure. He successfully worked through a business transition from a father to two sons who were married, creating post-nuptial agreements and now seeing the sons through the post-sale of the company to develop a plan to protect their assets for their family. He helped a banking family significantly reduce their estate tax liability while implementing a liquidity tool should there be a loss of a family shareholder. Bill has also assisted a company owned by three brothers to integrate the next generation into the family business by setting up family employment and compensation agreements while ensuring non-operating family members also realize income and benefit from the company.
Bill frequently speaks throughout the country on the topics of business succession, preparation of heirs and exit planning. Some of his guest speaking contributions include: the Colorado Bar Association, North American Steel Alliance (NASA), Southern Methodist University (SMU), Baylor University, The Family Business Council at California State University at Fullerton, University of Denver, New Mexico Farm Credit Bureau, American Business Bank, Vistage, Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA), Alpine Bank as well as several private briefings for trusted advisors and their clients.
Bill graduated from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and a minor in physics. After graduating from college, Bill entered the Air Force. He flew 130 missions over North and South Vietnam in the F-4 Phantom. He was credited with downing a MIG-17 over North Vietnam and the aircraft he flew is mounted at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia as part of a display of USAF combat aircraft.
He has since pursued his professional education by completing his CLU® and ChFC® studies. Bill is a member of the Family Firm Institute (FFI), the oldest and most prestigious multidisciplinary professional organization for family enterprise in the world. He is also a charter member of the Institute for Preparing Heirs at Pepperdine University, an institute founded for the purpose of training, education and research on family dynamics and wealth transfer.
Bill and his wife, Joy, share time between their homes in Scottsdale, Arizona and Castle Pines, Colorado. They have two sons who are married to their wonderful daughters-in-law. Bill and Joy love spending their free time with their five grandchildren. One son is following in Bill’s footsteps and working for AUCTORIS. Working with his son has provided Bill with up close and personal experience with the issues and conflicts that exist in family business succession.
